RSM Awards Day 2020 honors seniors virtually

RSM School held their Rosary and Awards Day honoring the Senior Class of 2020 virtually with a presentation on Wednesday, May 13 through Facebook Live.

Kim Phillips, Lead Teacher, started the presentation, “Welcome to our virtual Remsen St. Mary’s Awards Day for our Seniors. I am proud to announce the seniors and recognize all their hard work this year. Today several seniors will be receiving various scholarships from our school, community, and foundation. It is possible that our seniors may receive more scholarships that are not in this presentation.”

The valedictorian and salutatorian were then announced, “Congratulations to our Valedictorian, Emma Galles, and Salutatorian, Ashley Willman.”

St. Mary’s Honor Students were Madison Feller, Emma Galles, Sam Medina, Samantha Sauer, Spencer Schorg, Noah Schroeder, Skyler Waldschmitt, and Ashley Willman.

Students receiving President's Academic Awards included:

President's Academic Excellence – GPA of 3.5 and ITED 85th percentile in Reading or Math. Seniors have an ACT of 25 or higher. Skyler Waldschmitt received this award.

President's Academic Achievement - GPA of 3.5+ or GPA of 3.0 plus ITED 85 + in Reading or Math. Sam Medina, Madison Feller, Emma Galles, Samantha Sauer, Spencer Schorg, Noah Schroeder, and Ashley Willman received this award.

The graduating seniors were then introduced and what scholarships and awards they received were announced, which included the following:

Jacob Anderson is the son of Liz Fisch and Travis Anderson. He plans to attend the Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell, S.D. He received the Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Mariah Britt is the daughter of Roxanne and Andy Britt. She plans to attend Northwest Iowa Community College, majoring in Web and Graphic Design.

Madison Feller is the daughter of Melissa Feller and Pete Feller. She plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College, majoring in Criminal Justice. She received the Francis Muller Memorial Scholarship ($250) and Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Emma Galles is the daughter of Kelly and Bart Galles. She plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College, majoring in Medical Laboratory Technology. She received the Iowa State Bank Scholarship ($500), Remsen Community Action Scholarship ($250), Little Sioux Corn Processors Scholarship ($200), Kevin Kahler Girls Basketball Scholarship ($150), Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775), Stacie Fiedler Cheer Award, Governor's Scholar Award, and Five-year Math Award.

Brady Homan is the son of Katrina and Jeremy Homan. He plans to attend DMACC, majoring in Ag Studies. He received the Remsen Youth Bowlers Scholarship ($1,216.22) and Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Jesus Samuel Bazan Medina is the son of Gladys del Carmen Medina Colmenares and Claudio Bazan Ramos. He plans to attend Metropolitan Community College, majoring in Art and Design. He received the Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Michaela Nelson is the daughter of Ann and Mike Nelson. She plans to attend Western Iowa Community College, studying to be a Veterinary Assistant.

Seth Nelson is the son of Ann and Mike Nelson. He plans to attend Morningside College, majoring in Accounting. He received the Morningside Founder Scholarship ($10,000), Morningside Bowling Scholarship ($5,000), and ESports Scholarship ($500).

Brayden Ricke is the son of Allison Ricke and Brent Ricke. He plans to attend Northwest Iowa Community College and major in Heavy Equipment. He received the Francis Muller Memorial Scholarship ($250) and Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Samantha Sauer is the daughter of Sandy and Jeremy Sauer. She plans to attend Northeast Community College, studying to be a Veterinarian Technician. She received the Farmers Mutual Insurance Scholarship ($1,000) and Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Spencer Schorg is the son of Janelle and Rob Schorg. He plans to attend Briar Cliff University, majoring in Sports Management and Education. He received the Briar Cliff Academic Scholarship ($15,000) and Basketball Scholarship ($7,300).

Noah Schroeder is the son of Michelle and Russ Schroeder. He plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College, majoring in Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Technology, AAS. He received the American Bank Scholarship ($500), Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775), American Citizenship Award, Bernie Saggau Award, and Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Wesley Smart is the son of Kristen Buenzow and Don Smart. He plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College, majoring in Criminal Justice and Police Justice. He received the Clifford and Marjorie Perry Memorial Scholarship ($775).

Skyler Waldschmitt is the son of Angela and Rick Waldschmitt. He plans to attend Iowa State University, majoring in Agriculture Systems Technology. He received the ISU Forever Scholar ($2,500), C.R. Musser/ISU Agriculture Endowment Scholarship ($2,000), Remsen Farmers Coop Scholarship ($500), Remsen Chamber Scholarship ($500), Little Sioux Corn Processors Scholarship ($500), Iowa Farm Bureau Federation ($1,000), Northwest REC ($250), Athlete of the Year Award, and Five-year Math Award.

Ashley Willman is the daughter of Marge Willman and Scott Willman. She plans to attend Iowa State University and is undecided for her major. She received the Little Sioux Corn Processors Scholarship ($500) and Kevin Kahler Softball Scholarship ($150).

Phillips ended the ceremony with the following, “We wish our Remsen St. Mary's Class of 2020 the best of luck. We miss you a lot, and we are very proud of you.”
