Saluting the Class of 2020
LE MARS – Gehlen Catholic seniors were surprised when they saw their pictures and names lining the road for a Senior Sidewalk Parade outside of their high school building.
On Monday, May 6, Gehlen Catholic seniors and their parents were notified via e-mail that yard signs would be placed outside of the Gehlen Catholic High School front doors. Each student would have their own yard sign displaying a senior picture and their name.
“It is important our seniors know that even though we are not together in the four walls of our beloved school, we are still thinking about them. Since we cannot show them support in our school building, we tried to find a creative way to reach out and connect with them,” said Amy Jungers, development director at Gehlen Catholic.
With the help of four local banks including, American Bank, Iowa State Bank, Northwest Bank and Primebank, the yard signs were fully funded.
“I was doing the happy dance in my office after I heard back from each of the banks that they would be willing to support this fun project. It shows how tight knit our community is and that we all empathize with the seniors and their sadness of missing out on the last couple months of school,” said Jungers.
The yard signs will remain in the front lawn of school for another week and a half. After that, the seniors will be able to take their signs and display them in their own lawns if they wish.
“With the many disappointments our seniors have felt lately, we hope the yard signs provide them a positive memory from their COVID-19 experience,” explained Jungers. “They are living a senior year reality that none of us can truly relate to.”
