Jays stifled by Unity Christian again
LE MARS — For the second time this season, the Gehlen Catholic basketball teams came up short against War Eagle Conference foe Unity Christian.
The Lady Jays dropped their first meeting with the Knights by a 73-41 score and Thursday’s meeting resulted in a 78-52 loss. Unity built up their lead in the first half, outscoring the Jays 47-22 prior to halftime. The game was tied 8-8 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter before the Knights went on a 14-0 run to end the first quarter.
Unity had three players finish in double figures with Gracie Schoonhoven leading the way with 23 points. Janie Schoonhoven added 15 points and Jenna Bouma was the third player in double digits with 13 points.
Gehlen also had three players in double figures in scoring. Lauren Heying led the way with 15 points. Nearly half of those came at the free-throw line as she had seven makes from there. Sydney Livermore was next with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half as she was held to just a pair of free throws in the first two quarters. Josie Kolbeck was the third player in double figures with 11 points.
The Jays were without Addison Weber in the game. Weber has been averaging nearly 13 points per game for Gehlen this season.
The Gehlen boys were more competitive against the Knights than their first meeting, a 68-33 loss, but the Jays still found themselves on the losing end in a 71-53 game Thursday.
Gehlen outscored the Knights in the second half, but a double digit halftime deficit was too much to overcome. Unity had four players in double figures. Ethan Klompien led the Knights with 19 points followed by Brody Rens with 13. Tyrell Hulshof and Clayton Bosma added 10 points apiece with Bosma also leading the team with 13 rebounds and seven assists.
Keaten Bonderson led Gehlen with 22 points. Also in double figures for the Jays was Peyton Rochford with 11 points.
