CHEROKEE — Tony Gunter led Gehlen Catholic to six football playoff appearances, the most recent in 2011, before spending time on the football staff at Le Mars Community. Now in his first season as head coach at Cherokee, Gunter earned his first coaching win with the Braves in a 46-0 win over MMCRU on Friday, Sept. 6.

Quarterback Alex Paulsrud threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Cherokee bounced back from a 41-6 opening week loss to Storm Lake. Colton Woltman was the recipient of all three touchdown passes, his only three catches of the game. Paulsrud ran for a 27-yard score while Wil Lugar added an 8-yard touchdown run for the Braves.

Cherokee led 26-0 after a quarter as they went on to score their most points in a game since last year’s 57-0 result between the two teams.

He was also picked off twice by Ryan Hurd with one of those being returned 46 yards for a touchdown. The Royals also lost the ball on the ground three times with Brayden Farver returning one for a 27-yard touchdown.

MMCRU is now 0-2 on the season as they will travel to play at North Union (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 13.
