Lo-Ma edges WC-KP for top spot in cross country race

LOGAN ó Two of western Iowaís top girls cross country teams went head-to-head at a meet hosted by Logan-Magnolia on Tuesday. Lo-Ma, the top-ranked team in Class 1A in the IATC rankings, edged out Class 2A No. 3 WC-KP in the final team standings by a 37-51 scoring places total.

The defending Class 1A champs had four of the top seven runners in the race. Taylor and Courtney Sporrer, who took third and fourth as individuals at state last year, flip-flopped their results at the meet Tuesday with Courtney taking third in 19:17.85 as she finished about 10 seconds ahead of Taylor. Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center, who finished a place in front of the Sporrers at state last year, dominated the field with a winning time of 18:07.73 which was over a minute faster than runner-up Ryann Portch of AHSTW. Pogge is the top-ranked runner in 1A.

WC-KPís runners bunched up into a couple different packs. The first claimed the eight through 11 spots led by Erika Kuntz with a time of 20:59.34 as she crossed the finish line about a half second before Mary Putze. Sarah Putze was just over a second behind with a time of 21:01.17 while Sarahy Hamman came in next with a time of 21:13.29.

The rest of the teamís runners clocked times in the 22-minute range. Kalyn Cameron had the teamís final counting time with a 21st place finish in 22:05.97. The next place went to Lynsey Countryman who was about 10 seconds behind. Garcia Widman was the teamís final runner with a 24th place time of 22:39.06.

In the boys race, Tristen Jessen led WC-KP with a 27th place finish in 18:27.62. Collin Verschoor was 62nd in 20:27.08. The teamís final two runners ended nearly simultaneously with times both in the 22:22 timeframe for the 80th and 81st spots. WC-KP was one runner short of fielding a team score.

WC-KP will return to competition on Tuesday as they will be at the Gary Meyer Invitational hosted by Le Mars Community in Brunsville.
