Le Mars baseball takes down Spirit Lake
SPIRIT LAKE — Le Mars Community’s time in the Lakes Conference officially came to an end Tuesday as the baseball team played Spirit Lake for the last league game as a member of the Lakes. The Bulldogs leave on a winning note as they topped the Indians 8-1.
Braiden Hurd put together a solid performance on the mound in a complete game win, his first of the season after starting 0-2 in two starts and five appearances this season. Hurd gave up an unearned run to Spirit Lake in the second inning, but kept the Indians off the scoreboard the rest of the game as he allowed just three hits and three walks. He struck out six in the contest.
Ben Newman came into the game with Spirit Lake’s second-lowest ERA at 2.86, but the Bulldogs knocked him around for eight runs as he was forced out by pitch limitation rules one out shy of a complete game. It was a decent start to the game for Newman who kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the first three innings. Then, Le Mars broke the floodgates for eight runs over the course of the next three innings including a five-run sixth to pull away.
Mason Parrott hit his fourth home run of the season as he is one of just two players in the Lakes Conference with multiple homers this summer.
Alex Irwin led the Bulldogs with three hits while Jakob Bixenman ended with two hits as they were the only players with multiple hits. Everyone else in the lineup had at least one base hit.
Josh Pratt, Alec Dreckman and Hurd each hit doubles for their hits with Hurd and Pratt leading the team with 2 RBI apiece. Dreckman drove in one in the contest.
Le Mars finishes the league schedule with a 7-5 record, sweeping the Indians this season with a 16-6 win in five innings in the first meeting. The team is 9-12 overall after the win.
