Handful of event wins for local girls at War Eagle track meet
ORANGE CITY — Local girls came away with a handful of event wins at the War Eagle Conference track meet held at De Valois Stadium on Monday, April 29. Overall though it was Unity Christian and South O’Brien taking wins in most of the events, a year after Plymouth County’s schools combined to win 16 of the 19 events. The local teams generally finished in the middle of the pack in the team standings with Gehlen topping the local schools with 84 points for third place with MMCRU and Akron-Westfield next in the team standings.
MMCRU was led by Kaitlyn Goth with strong finishes in the distance races. She earned a 20 second win in the 3000 meter race with a time of 11:55.69 and was second in the 1500 with a time of 5:36.95 and the 800 with a time of 2:43.86. She also anchored the distance medley relay to a second place finish of 4:51.46 which was four seconds back of South O’Brien. The Royals had success in another longer distance race as they finished third in the 4x800 in a time of 11:11.48.
The team’s other successful event was the high jump with a pair of point scorers. Emily Dreckman finished in second place with a height of 4-10 which matched South O’Brien’s Taryn Hintz. Ellie Hilbrands ended sixth with a clearance of 4-04.
For Remsen St. Mary’s, all three of their points came from Maria Russell in the distance races. She finished in sixth in the 3000 with a time of 12:58.69 and was fifth in the 1500 in 5:57.90. Both of those times are the fastest of the season for Russell.
