All About States
Mrs. Wimmer’s second grade class at St. Mary’s Elementary started learning about individual states across the United States of America about a month ago. The “States Project” is meant to allow students to learn about culture and history of different states and this project provides students the opportunity to show their knowledge to their classmates by giving presentations over a States Book that they create.
Last school year, as a part of the states project, Mrs. Wimmer’s second grade class decided to write a letter to a Catholic elementary school in each state. We decided to do this again this year! The students were excited about this opportunity to hear from other students their age from across the country! For this part of their project, the second graders had to write a letter explaining who they are (including a class picture), that they are from Remsen, Iowa, and explain a few details about Iowa. At the end of each letter, the second graders asked if the students from the other Catholic school could write a response letter in which they discussed their own class and state.
Last week, we started hearing back from the students from other states! So far, the second graders received replies from three states! These cities and states include: St. Paul, Minnesota; Urbandale, Iowa; and Lansing, Michigan. The second graders have learned a lot about different states after reading the return letters! Dylan Schroeder stated, “I enjoyed doing this project because I like learning what other second grade classes do in different states and I like when we write back and forth with each other.”
With the return letters, the other schools have asked the Remsen St. Mary’s second graders to respond with more information about the state of Iowa! It seems that with a little curiosity and kindness, the St. Mary’s second graders formed new “pen-pal” friendships with other second graders from across the country. We look forward to receiving more responses and learning more about other states across America. This project has been a lot of fun!
