LE MARS — The Le Mars Community girls tennis team returned to the .500 mark with a 7-2 win over Storm Lake on Monday. It was the team’s first win in nearly two weeks as they last won a match April 16 against Cherokee.

“The girls performed well against a very scrappy Storm Lake team,” Le Mars Head Coach Tifany Wright said.

The Lady Bulldogs secured wins in all three of their doubles matches. In the top doubles grouping, Madison Dreckman and Caroline Meis won by a 10-1 score over their opponents. The second doubles match was the closest, but Abby Van Otterloo and Joan Meis still won by a fairly large 10-4 margin. The third doubles team of Arlinna Bowen and Kristen Heimgartner won their match by a 10-2 score.

Bowen had seen some doubles action previously, but made an appearance in the No. 6 singles spot in the match against the Tornadoes. While Bowen lost her match by a 10-6 score, Wright was happy with the fight shown in the match by her player.

“She never quit. She was down by a lot and clawed her way back to make a match out of it,” Wright said. “Whenever I talked to her on the changeover, she would say ‘I am determined to win this thing!’ Her grit and hard work showed. I was impressed with her no-quit attitude.”

At No. 5, Kristen Heimgartner lost her match by a 10-5 score in what was Storm Lake’s only other win. Le Mars claimed the top four singles spots with scores getting progressively better from a 10-4 win by Joan Meis in the top spot. Caroline Meis won her No. 2 matchup by a 10-3 score while Madison Dreckman won 10-2. In the largest margin of victory on the day in singles matches, Abby Van Otterloo wrapped up a quick 10-1 win.

The team is now 3-3 as they have now faced each Lakes Conference foe at least once. They are scheduled to face Spencer on the road on Tuesday, weather permitting, as part of a stretch where they are set to face opponents on four consecutive days including the Lakes Conference tournament on Wednesday.
