LE MARS — It was a sweep for Le Mars Community over Spirit Lake on Thursday in Lakes Conference action.

The Lady Bulldogs struggled in their Dec. 18 outing with the Indians as they scored a season-low in a 40-32 win, but had little trouble in the rematch. The final margin matched the total points scored by the team in the first meeting in a 67-27 win.

“We came out and played really well from the start,” Le Mars girls head coach Judd Kopperud said. “We shot the ball extremely well tonight. When the ball goes in the hoop everything looks good, you play well at both ends. Defensively we played pretty solid except for the third quarter where we had a couple mental breakdowns, but other than that we played really well defensively for the rest of the way. We got contributions from everyone.”

Madison Dreckman singlehandedly outscored the Indians with 28 points which included a school record eight 3-pointers made in the game. Kylie Dreckman added a career-best 13 points and Annie Ellis scored 11 for her fourth straight game in double figures.

The Le Mars boys avenged their 58-54 loss to the Indians in a 56-45 victory at home.

Spencer Mackey led the team with 15 points while Alex Irwin and Alec Dreckman had 12 apiece. Irwin led the way with five assists and Aisea Toki pulled down 16 rebounds.

Despite the win, Le Mars boys head coach Dave Irwin wasn’t completely happy.

“It was a very uninspired win,” Irwin said. “Our guys did not play with the passion and purpose that have been fairly consistent over the last few games. We were able to make enough plays down the stretch to hold them off. We are going to need to be much better this weekend at the Pentagon and certainly much better when we play for the conference title next week at Western.”

The Le Mars boys (9-8) will play Hamlin (S.D.) at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Saturday.

The Class 4A No. 9 Lady Bulldogs (15-3) will join the boys for the Lakes Conference finale at Western Christian on Tuesday as they take a nine-game winning streak into the contest.
