Royals complete sweep of Clay Central-Everly
MARCUS — The MMCRU boys basketball team brought an end to their seven-game losing streak with 64-51 win over Clay Central-Everly on Tuesday, January 22, as part of a Royal sweep. The win was the first since beating the same Mavericks team back on Dec. 18. The Royals matched a season high in scoring by putting up identical amounts of points in both games against CC-E.
The Royals were in control for most of the night as they built up a 17 point lead by halftime and only slipped a few points from that for their final margin of victory.
Joel Johnson led the team with 16 points as he connected on three shots from beyond the arc. Johnson, who has made a 3-pointer in all 16 games for the Royals this year, is currently trailing only Hunter Dekkers of West Sioux for most in the War Eagle Conference.
Along with his scoring, Johnson added five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Cade Pepper and Robert Russell scored 15 points apiece for the team. Russell led the team with six rebounds, six steals and five assists.
The MMCRU girls trailed by two after a quarter, but blew out the Mavericks in the final three frames for a 73-28 win.
Taylor Harpenau led the team with 20 points in the game and added six rebounds and a pair of steals.
Ellie Hilbrands added a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds with eight of her boards coming on the offensive glass.
Jaylen Bork completed 6-of-7 shots from the floor including all three of her 3-point attempts for a career-best 15 points.
Emily Dreckman scored six of her eight points at the charity stripe as she dished out 10 assists and had six steals, best on the team in both categories, while adding six rebounds.
The 13-4 MMCRU girls will hit the road on Friday to play a West Sioux team which is undefeated in War Eagle Conference play this year.
The MMCRU boys are now 3-13 on the season, matching their win total for the previous two seasons. One more win out of their final five regular season games would make this season the most successful in the program’s three years. First up on the schedule is a trip to undefeated West Sioux on Friday, January 25.
