Lady Westerners earn win over Remsen St. Mary’s
AKRON — The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team bounced back from a loss for the fourth time this season, this time with a 55-21 win over Remsen St. Mary’s on Tuesday, December 18. The Lady Westerners started the season with a pair of losses and have since bounced between wins and defeats as the team has not managed to string together more than one win at a time.
The win was a balanced all-around effort from the Westerners with four players scoring in double digits. Brooke Koele ended with a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. She picked up nine of the her team-leading number of rebounds on the offensive glass. The team’s lone senior also led the way with five assists and matched Natalie Nielsen with three blocked shots.
Nielsen scored 13 points of her own with over half of those at the free-throw line where she was 7-of-8. She was second on the team with seven boards.
RSM Head Coach Scott Willman said the height advantage went to the Westerners, but praised the 5-foot-9 Brittany Johnson for her effort against the A-W bigs.
“They have great height in a 6-foot-3 freshman and an experienced 6-foot-2 Koele,” Willman said. “Brittany Johnson did a very good job battling for post positioning by anticipating and moving into quarter and full front.”
Chloee Colt added 12 points for the Westerners and Kassy Vanderlinden scored 11 which included three shots from beyond the arc as the team’s other double digit scorers.
Lexi Harpenau scored six points to lead the Hawks while Sydney Schroeder added five.
Remsen St. Mary’s falls to 0-9 as they enter the winter break.
