Giving Tuesday 2018

Thursday, December 6, 2018

The holiday season is a time for giving and Giving Tuesday brings a great deal of giving to the table. Giving Tuesday is an international day of giving to charities throughout the world. The event occurs annually on the Thursday after Thanksgiving in the United States. This year’s Giving Tuesday was held on November 27. Big companies that helped take part in the donating procedure this year were Facebook, Pizza Hut, Ronald McDonald House, and the Buddy Project.

According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, this year’s donations brought in $380 million dollars. The donations had a 27% increase from last year. Facebook took on a big role in this year’s donations. The network partnered with PayPal and created new tools to make donating easier and faster. Facebook promoted that they would double the proceeds of those who donated if they reached $7 million in proceeds. In 2017, Facebook helped raise $45 million and this year they reached up to $125 million.

Renea Ogren, the MMCRU substitute guidance counselor, took part in donating to Giving Tuesday and said, “Anytime giving can be doubled is a great and tremendous opportunity to reach beyond local charities. I normally would donate even if the proceeds weren’t doubled, but since they are it’s a great opportunity to donate.”
