Cheer squad takes it to State
On November 3, the MMCRU cheer team packed their bags and bows to take part in the state cheer competition. The competition was held at the Jacobsen Center in Des Moines against 155 teams. There were seven teams in their division. The Royals took 5th place.
Taking part of their last state cheer competition were seniors Jocee Roberts, Jadyn Steffen, Courtney Miller, Nicole Maass and Emily Rigney.
Senior Jadyn Steffen said, “At state we did our absolute best. All the hard work we put in leading up to that performance was definitely worth it. Yes, I wish we would have gotten to bring home a trophy, but as a team we left that mat with no regrets and our heads held high.”
Another senior, Jocee Roberts, shared, “I think we could’ve done better, but we got what we wanted. All the hard work and long practices were all worth it. It’s just awesome how we stuck together. I couldn’t have done it without any of them.”
Cheer coach Sarah Bottjen added, “Coach Holmes and I are so very proud of how far these girls have come this season. They have had a lot of obstacles to overcome this fall, and they worked as a team to be the very best they could. The routine they performed for the judges at state was the best routine they have done and that is all that matters. Like we told them on Saturday, we came to Des Moines with a goal: to show them our best and to place in the top five. That is exactly what they did and that is all we can ask of them! 5th out of 155 teams that came to Des Moines is nothing to hang our heads about. These girls showed heart and dedication to their team, which is all that we could ask for.”
