MMCRU Girls’ Basketball Preview
The Lady Royals come into the 2018-2019 basketball season looking to build off of an 11-12 record from the previous season. Aliyah Jackson, Megan Loutsch, Aspen Woodall, and Mahaley Dirks are the four seniors gone from last year.
Jackson led the team in points, averaging a little over nine per game, and led the assist category with 43 on the year. Loutsch was third on the team with just under six points per game and almost three rebounds per game.
The Lady Royals still have pieces to succeed, with juniors Haley Schwarz and Faith Olson, along with the leading three point shooter from last year, senior Madison Treinen. Schwarz led the charge in steals and most notably rebounds, with 171. The next closest in that category was Jackson with 77. With some young talent added to the roster, this is a team that could take off at any point during the season.
Derrick Marra, an assistant coach for the Lady Royals has seen great things from the younger and older girls so far this week in practice. “I think they’re very excited, and they’ve come forth with their own expectations. It’s great to see them setting goals for themselves.” With just one senior on the roster, coach Marra believes that many underclassmen could play a vital role in determining how far this team can go. “They just need to work hard every day and be ready to step up if needed.”
The Lady Royals tip off the season in Marcus on Tuesday, November 20, against Storm Lake St. Mary’s. The start time is scheduled for 7:00.
