Wheelers roll over Remsen St. Mary’s
AUDUBON — Audubon avenged their only loss of last season with a season-opening win over Remsen St. Mary’s on Friday, August 24. The Wheelers, who lost at home to RSM in the state quarterfinals last year, flipped the script as they won 58-26.
Skyler Schultes accounted for six of the touchdowns for the Wheelers with four of those rushing scores. He carried the ball 31 times for 189 yards. The junior quarterback also threw for a pair of scores as he ended 10-of-16 with 199 yards.
Joel Klocke caught one of those passes for a 75 yard score while Jackson Jensen had the other scoring catch.
Blaine Harpenau led the Hawks in his first start at quarterback. He went 13-of-25 for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns passes. Both scoring plays went to Skyler Waldschmitt who was Harpenau’s favorite target. He caught eight passes for 115 yards.
Harpenau also picked up over nine yards per carry as he rushed the ball seven times for 64 yards.
Brody Schorg added 12 yards on the ground on a pair of touches while Waldschmitt added a rushing score with 10 yards on four carries.
Turnovers plagued both teams in the game as the Hawks fumbled the ball five times and Harpenau threw an interception. Noah Muzney picked up a pair of fumbles and returned them for touchdowns for the Wheelers.
The Hawks recovered four Audubon fumbles with Xavier Galles jumping on three loose balls and Jeremy Koenck scooping up a fumble and returning it 13 yards for a score.
Noah Schroeder led the team with 11.5 tackles, followed closely behind by Waldschmitt with 10.5 tackles. Galles added nine tackles including two for loss.
RSM (0-1) will have their home opener on Friday, August 31 as they host Boyer Valley, another playoff opponent from last year. Boyer Valley dropped their opener 41-0 to Ar-We-Va.
