Thursday, June 7, 2018

LE MARS ó Gehlen Catholic and Remsen St. Maryís renewed their rivalry on the ball diamonds on Friday, May 25.

The softball game saw the Lady Jays get their first win of the season with a 13-8 victory over the Hawks.

Gehlen knocked out 18 hits in the game as the team used five-run innings in the fourth and sixth to pull away for the win.

Anna Britt had four hits for the Jays and scored twice. Sydney Livermore and Chloe Bunkers each had three hits with two of Bunkersí hits being doubles.

Kennedy Heying had the teamís other double as she recorded two hits, as did Addison Weber and Brooke Woerdehoff.

It was also Woerdehoff getting the win in the circle. Of the eight runs allowed, only three were earned. She had five walks and strikeouts.

RSM saw Veda Pick account for half of the teamís runs scored. She walked and had a double and also reached twice on errors.

Ana Conover had 3 RBI with a pair of doubles in three at-bats. Sydney Schorg added 2 RBI.

Hailey Klein took the loss in the circle.

The RSM baseball team came away with a 7-6 win in a back-and-forth game. The Hawks retook the lead with two runs scored in the top of the seventh. Brody Ricke and Skyler Waldschmitt led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Marcus Konopasek loaded the bases with a 1-out walk and Derrick Schorg gave the team the lead with a double to left.

The Jays nearly put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the inning as Jeff Augustine and Lucas McCarty started the inning by each getting hit by a pitch. A walk to Collin Budden loaded the bases with nobody out. Cole Wiltgen drove in a run on a fielderís choice as shortstop Derrick Schorg flipped to second baseman Blaine Harpenau for the out.

The game came to a close on a dramatic double play as Isaac Herbst flew out to Kuchel in center field and McCarty was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run after tagging up from third.
