RSM wins two against HMS

Thursday, June 7, 2018

HARTLEY ó Class 1A No. 5 Remsen St. Maryís gave up the tying runs in the bottom of the seventh after leading by as many as five earlier in the game, but scored what would be the winning run in the top of the eighth in an 8-7 victory over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Monday, June 4.

An error by center fielder Carter Kuchel brought home the tying runs in the bottom of the seventh for HMS, but an error by the HMS center fielder led to the go-ahead run scoring for RSM in the eighth.

Spencer Schorg, who came on in relief in the seventh, struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win for RSM. Schorg got four strikeouts in his 1 2/3 innings of work in relief as he took the win.

David Grady suffered from lack of execution in the field by his defense as just two of the seven runs that scored on his watch were earned. He gave up eight hits while striking out six.

While Kuchelís error made things interesting late in the game, he had a two-run home run in the fourth to put RSM up by four and the team stretched their lead out to its largest of the game later in the inning on a Skyler Waldschmitt RBI single.

Derrick Schorg went 4-for-5 at the plate out of the leadoff spot and hit a pair of doubles for the only other extra-base hits of the game.

Mitchell Schiltz added 2 RBI on a 3-for-5 night batting second.

After scoring one in the first and two in the second, the Remsen St. Maryís softball team exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning as they won 15-0 in four innings over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

The team hopes they have finally turned the corner after a string of eight consecutive losses followed by a 2-1 showing at the CYO tournament over the weekend.

The first 12 batters of the fourth inning reached base before HMS finally recorded an out.

Lexi Harpenau led RSM with three hits and the same number of runs scored along with 2 RBI.

Emma Galles had 3 RBI on a pair of hits in the game.

Bailey Penning drove in two and scored twice on a 2-for-2 night with a pair of walks.

Ashley Willman and Ana Conover also had 2 RBI apiece.

Most of the later scoring was on walks and singles but the opening innings saw an RBI double from Penning in the first as well as back-to-back doubles from Brittany Johnson and Willman to start the second.

Taya Mason took the loss for HMS as 11 of the runs were charged to her. Maggie Albert pitched the final three outs but gave up four runs.

Emma Galles threw a complete game two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks in the game.

RSM (4-9) will return to action on Wednesday, June 6 at home against Gehlen Catholic. The Jays won the first meeting of the season by a score of 13-8.

RSM baseball improves to 9-1 on the season and will host Hinton in a rescheduled make-up game on Tuesday, June 5.
