Schorg ties for 20th at state golf
NEWTON — Remsen St. Mary’s golfer Spencer Schorg finished tied for 20th out of 64 individual golfers at the IHSAA Class 1A State Golf Championship held at Westwood Golf Club on May 24-25.
Schorg finished with an 18-hole score of 89 on the first day of the event at the par-71 course. He birdied the par-4 second hole, one of just nine under-par scores on the hole across the two days. The first round also saw pars on No. 6 as well as 16 and 17 on the back nine.
The second day saw Schorg reduce his total strokes by five. His lone birdie of the second round came on No. 12. He was one of just two golfers across the two-day event to birdie the par-4 hole.
The RSM golfer doubled his amount of pars up to six in the second round with three on each nine. He again hit even-par on No. 6 and cut a stroke from his first round score on the first and third holes. On the back nine, Schorg matched par again on 16 and 17 while adding 15 to a par completion as well.
Jacob Hesner of East Buchanan was the overall medalist with a 147 total across the championship, just +5 for the course. He edged Winfield-Mt. Union golfer Kaleb Hagge by a stroke for the win.
Northwest Iowa teams Harris-Lake Park and Westwood held the top two spots in the team standings after the first day, but Grundy Center pulled in front on the final day for a four stroke win over H-LP for the team title. Westwood shot nine strokes worse on the second day to drop into a tie for fifth in the final team standings.
