Royals claim first baseball win of year
MARCUS — MMCRU fought back from a 5-1 deficit to beat South O’Brien 8-5 on Tuesday, May 29. The win was the first of the season for the baseball team after a pair of close one-run losses.
“The win against South O’Brien was a very emotional victory for the Royals after the tragic loss of a member of the MMCRU baseball family,” MMCRU Head Coach TJ Schaefer said. “The boys wanted to win this one for Conner Sand tonight. He is a very big part of our baseball family and these boys care for him like a brother.”
Chris Schmid gave the Royals an early 1-0 lead after a leadoff single and stolen base before coming around to score on an error.
The Wolverines put up five runs in the top of the third as Morgen Overman ran into trouble as South O’Brien strung together five walks and Peyton Struve, Drew Faust and Peyton Brasser all drove in runs with base hits.
Joel Johnson came on in relief and shut down the Wolverines the rest of the game, striking out 10 in 4 2/3 innings and giving up just one hit.
“Joel has been on fire this year,” Schaefer said. “He had to take a no-decision last week striking out 14 batters and only giving up one hit against Trinity. He really got us out of a tough jam tonight.”
The Royals rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the third on a flurry of base hits. The team took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth as Jordan Marks brought home Zack Bonnstetter and Cade Pepper on a squeeze play.
