RSM baseball, A-W softball secure wins
AKRON — The Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team and Akron-Westfield softball team came away with wins as the two War Eagle Conference teams met up on Wednesday, May 23.
The baseball game saw RSM score in all six innings played in a 14-3 win over the Westerners. Eleven hits and seven walks provided plenty of offensive opportunities for the Hawks. Leadoff batter Derrick Schorg led the team with 4 RBI on a triple and single in the game. He was the only player with multiple RBI. Brett Galles had three hits, two of which were triples as the only other player with more than one hit.
David Grady got the win on the mound as he gave up all three runs with the same number of strikeouts in five innings of work.
AJ Nemesio led the Westerners with a pair of hits and a walk. Quinn Bundy, Conner Anderson and Damien Ericson each had an RBI. Anderson took the loss for A-W.
The softball game featured another quick start for the Lady Westerners with a 5-0 advantage after an inning, but the team had to hold off another comeback bid as RSM scored in each of the final four innings to pull to within a 7-5 final score.
Alayna Mullinix had a double as part of her two hit game. She also scored twice and stole a pair of bases while driving in two.
Courtney Waterbury added 2 RBI while Jaden Harris reached on two hits and a walk.
Eighth-grader Natalie Nielsen picked up the win with 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
Ana Conover led RSM with 2 RBI on a pair of hits and a walk. Bailey Penning was the only other Hawk with multiple hits as she drove in a run.
Hailey Klein took the loss as all seven runs were earned. She gave up nine hits and six walks while fanning a pair.
