Royals lose pair of one-run games
FONDA/REMSEN — The MMCRU baseball team lost a pair of heartbreakers to start the season with one-run losses in both. At Newell-Fonda on Monday, May 21, the Mustangs earned a 6-5 walk-off win. MMCRU led 5-1 after three as Morgan Overman had 3 RBI for the team on a pair of hits and Tyler Whited added another RBI with a pair of doubles as part of a three hit night. The Mustangs began to figure out MMCRU starter Connor Sand as he left the game in the fifth with a high pitch count after allowing five runs, three of which were earned. He struck out seven, but also walked five batters.
Tristen Olson came on in relief and was charged with the loss after allowing the game-winning run. He struck out and walked three batters.
The following night, May 22, the team went to extra innings against Trinity Christian and fell 3-2.
Joel Johnson put together a strong pitching performance, but was still handed the loss. He struck out 15 and allowed just one hit, but gave up three runs including one unearned run.
Again the Royals had the early lead at 2-0 after three, but couldn’t get the offense going in the later innings. The team had six hits, half of which went for extra bases as Chris Schmid had a double and triple and Olson added another triple in the loss.
