RSM sweeps Unity to begin season
ORANGE CITY — The Remsen St. Mary’s baseball and softball teams each won their season openers against Unity Christian on Monday, May 21.
The softball game featured a score more likely to be seen on a football field as the Lady Hawks won 21-9 in six innings. Both teams scored in each of the first four innings with the Hawks putting the final nail in the coffin with a six-run sixth.
Hailey Klein went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of walks as she drove in two and scored twice. She also got the win in the circle. She allowed all nine runs, seven of which were earned, while giving up seven hits and five walks and fanning four.
Ashley Willman, Emma Galles and Ana Conover each added two hits and a pair of RBI with Galles and Willman each hitting a double.
Along with 12 hits, the Hawks walked 18 times and reached base on HBP four times. Sydney Schorg had five of those walks and came around to score four times.
Unity had their best inning in the bottom of the fourth when they scored five runs to pull to within 15-9 after the Hawks scored eight in the top of the frame. Erin Wieringa hit a grand slam to finish with 4 RBI for the Knights.
The RSM baseball team found themselves in a pitchers’ duel with Unity and escaped with a 1-0 win.
Blaine Harpenau pitched the complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out 14 in the win.
Joshua Dragstra was strong for the Knights, but allowed the only run of the game in the sixth inning before being taken out. He gave up just two hits in 5.2 innings of work, but walked five before Micah Goslinga finished the game, walking two more and allowing a hit.
Jeremy Koenck scored the lone run of the game for the Hawks as he stole three bases coming in as a courtesy runner.
Derrick Schorg reached base on a pair of hits and a walk while Marcus Konopasek had the team’s other hit.
Both RSM teams are 1-0 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday, May 23, at Akron-Westfield.
