KP-WC dominates home track and field invitational

KINGSLEY — The KP-WC track and field teams finally got a home meet in on Monday. The meet was smaller than originally scheduled with several teams unable to attend the make-up date. KP-WC won the team titles in both the girls and boys standings.

Girls

Abby Petersen won the 100 meter dash by nearly a second over the rest of the field with a time of 12.96 seconds.

In the 400, Makayla Archer and Kalyn Cameron took the top two spots for the team with Archer ending in 1:03.58 and Cameron about two seconds behind.

It was a similar result in the 800 where Suzanne Putze edged out teammate Rylee Wright for first by two seconds with a time of 2:26.67.

KayLynne Bechen won both the 1500 and 3000 races, winning by nearly four seconds in 5:35.16 in the 1500 and by 17 seconds over teammate Mary Putze in the 3000 with a time of 12:03.61.

Olivia Japenga of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn won by the slimmest of margins in the 100 hurdles. Her time of 17.33 was 0.01 better than Paige Kuchel. Emily Redinius finished third for KP-WC with a time of 17.55.

The 4x100 team of Petersen, Madison Goodwin, Jayde Barto and Bri Jensen won with a time of 52.35 seconds to slip past runner-up West Monona by over a second.

Unity Christian won the 4x200 race in 1:50.34 as Goodwin, Barto, Jensen and Skylar Hannah finished a second behind.

Archer, Jensen, Wright and Suzanne Putze won the 4x400 race with a time of 4:21.41, a time four seconds faster than runner-up West Monona.

The 4x800 team of Wright, Cameron, Archer and Suzanne Putze finished well over a minute before the next team with a time of 10:06.30.

Unity took the top spot in the sprint medley with a time of 1:54.77. KP-WC ended in 1:56.17 with Goodwin, Petersen, Jensen and Barto sharing the baton.

The distance medley team won by nearly 30 seconds over runner-up Unity with a time of 4:32.19 as Petersen, Goodwin, Barto and Suzanne Putze put together a strong performance.

Unity edged out a win by 48-hundredths in the shuttle hurdle race with a time of 1:14 flat. Kuchel and Redinius joined Jessi Inman and Madison Wurth for the runner-up time.

Emily Kraft won the shot put with a throw of 36-02.50 and was second in the discus at 97-01. Regan Plendl won the discus with a throw of 125-06.

Boys

Only two other schools competed against KP-WC in the boys events with Unity and West Monona in attendance. KP-WC won the team title and finished third with their JV contingent.

KP-WC had the top three performers in the 100 meter dash. Blake Erdmann won in 11.89. He was followed by JV runner Jake Kuntz and varsity runner Trey Dugan.

The top four in the 200 were all KP-WC athletes. Ethan Copeland won with a time of 24 seconds flat. A pair of JV athletes were next with Gage Husted and Karsen Gray. Lee Phelan was fourth.

Pierce Turner won the 400 with a time of 1:02.49 to beat runner-up West Monona by two seconds. Turner was runner-up in the 1600 with a time of 5:24.66 as Unity’s Alex Nonhof won the race in 5:03.58.

KP-WC was the only team to enter the 110 hurdle race. Payton Kuchel won with a time of 15.95 to edge out three of his teammates.

Patrick Carney took the top spot in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.85 to beat teammate Kole Reis by two seconds.

Erdmann, Husted, Dugan and Phelan teamed up for a win in the 4x100 with a time of 47.44. The KP-WC JV team was runner-up.

Copeland and Kuchel joined Anthony Baird and Eric Hoffman for a 12 second win over Unity with a time of 3:34.24 in the 4x400.

Erdmann, Husted, Baird and Copeland won the sprint medley by about eight seconds over the Knights with a time of 1:41.67.

The distance medley was closer with just a four second margin, but KP-WC still beat Unity in the race. Baird, Kuchel, Copeland and Hoffman ended in 3:44.11.

The team also won the shuttle hurdle race as Reis, Gray, Phelan and Carney ended in 1:07.86.

Nick Phelps easily won both throwing events. He hit 63-11.75 in the shot put, over 22 feet better than second place. His 179-02 throw in the discus was about 65 feet better than second place.
