Little Royals Preschool teachers Kate Reuter and Miranda Olsen have worked hard to achieve a 5 Star Quality Rating based on Iowa’s Quality Rating System through the Iowa Child Care Resource and Referral Program for Little Royals Preschool at MMCRU - Remsen Elementary.

According to the website, “Iowa’s Quality Rating System (QRS) is a voluntary child care rating system for DHS Licensed Centers, DHS Licensed Preschools, Department of Education programs and Child Development Homes. QRS was developed to raise the quality of child care in Iowa, raise the number of children in high-quality child care settings and to educate parents about quality in child care. QRS uses a rating system geared toward increasing quality. Participating providers are rated with 1 to 5 stars, depending on how many improvement steps they are awarded.”

“The rating is determined when a provider completes an application that states they have met specific criteria related to a QRS level. The specific criteria a provider completes will depend on the QRS level desired. Criteria may include additional training, having a program evaluated by a trained observer, and completing program and staff improvement plans. Once a provider has completed the steps to achieve a specific level, the application and documentation is submitted to the QRS regional specialist.”

“A provider who achieves Level 1 has met Iowa’s registration or licensing standards. A provider who achieves Level 2 has received additional training and made the first steps toward improving quality. Providers in Levels 3-5 have made significant steps in meeting key indicators of quality in the areas of such as professional development, health and safety, environment, family and community partnership, leadership and administration.”

MMCRU - Remsen Elementary Principal Toby Young stated, “It’s a great honor for our Little Royals Preschool Program to receive. All credit goes to our two teachers Kate Reuter and Miranda Olsen who work tirelessly to go above and beyond to meet each of the requirements to receive a 5 Star Quality Rating. We’re very proud of our Preschool program and thankful we have two wonderful teachers who take such pride in making sure our students are provided the best education possible.”

The teachers for Little Royals Preschool are Kate Reuter and Miranda Olsen. Reuter has been teaching Preschool for 10 years, while this year marks Olsen’s first year teaching Preschool.

Reuter stated, “We are extremely proud of this achievement. Preschool is not just a job to us. It’s a special calling. This profession requires dedication, devotion and commitment. We often feel these students are our own. We want to inspire them to learn about the world around them and there is nothing more inspiring than to see the face of a child who has mastered a new skill or conquered a challenge. Sure some days are exhausting. However when we greet those smiling little faces we are empowered beyond words. We don’t have a job. We have a gift and we thank God every day that we can make a positive difference in the lives of those children.”

According to Reuter, there are only three others preschools in Northwestern Iowa that have achieved a 5 Star Rating. Reuter said, “I’ve had to take several classes and have a state site visit.”

Little Royals Preschool is a four-days a week program that runs from 8:00 a.m. - 3:25 p.m.
