KINGSLEY/SIOUX CITY — The Remsen St. Mary’s boys basketball team is just a win away from advanced to its second-ever state tournament after making the trip to Des Moines for the first time last season.

On Tuesday, February 20, at the Kingsley-Pierson gym, the Hawks overcame a bit of a sluggish start against West Monona, trailing by one after a quarter, but pulling away for a 64-49 win.

RSM saw balanced scoring as four of the starters scored in double digits. Spencer Schorg and Brody Ricke tied for most points with both pouring in 14. Ricke added nine rebounds while Schorg had seven boards and a team-best six assists.

Nicholas Ruden was right behind in the scoring column with 13 points. He added nine rebounds and had the team’s only block of the game.

Carter Kuchel scored 10 points while adding seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

RSM was outscored in two of the quarters, a rarity for the undefeated team, but responded with strong ends to both halves.

West Monona was led by Gage Rotnicke who scored over half of the team’s points with 25. He hit five 3-pointers for the Spartans.

The district final game at Sioux City East on Thursday, February 22, featured a rematch of an earlier season non-conference game against Kingsley-Pierson. Again the Panthers struggled against the Hawks as they managed just 23 points, their lowest total of the season which had previously been 38 points, also against RSM.

The RSM defense pitched a shutout in the final frame to come away with a 49-23 win.

Spencer Schorg added 12 points on a pair of treys with two steals.

Brody Ricke ended with 10 points, eight steals, six assists, four rebounds and a block in a strong all-around performance.
