Hawks survive scare from A-W; Lady Westerners cruise
AKRON — The No. 3 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s boys basketball team survived one of their more challenging games on their perfect season, needing a second half comeback to beat Akron-Westfield 68-55 on Thursday, January 25.
The Westerners have shown they can be a deadly team when they get hot from the perimeter. The team was just that in the first half of Thursday’s game, knocking down eight 3-pointers in the first half. A-W jumped out to a 19-9 lead after a quarter and extended their lead out to 11 by halftime.
After halftime, the team struggled to put the ball in the hoop, scoring just 11 points in the second half as the RSM defense buckled down and got their own offense to click.
The Hawks pulled ahead and took a two point lead into the final quarter before outscoring the Westerners 14-3 across the final eight minutes.
Conner Anderson was the hot hand for much of the night for A-W as he connected on six of the team’s 10 3-pointers in the game. He ended with 20 points which tied for most on the team along with Nick Jacobs. Jacobs hit a trio of 3-pointers, but ended just 6-of-17 from the floor. He made 5-of-7 free throws and finished with five rebounds.
Aaron Hartman led the team with six rebounds and had the same number of points.
Leighton Blake scored five points and pulled down five boards.
For the Hawks, it was an inside game that countered the perimeter shooting of A-W. The team went just 2-of-11 from outside, but were 23-of-43 from inside.
Brody Ricke tied a career high with 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting. He led the team with four steals and added five rebounds.
Nicholas Ruden ended with 12 points, half of which came at the charity stripe, as he led the team with seven rebounds.
Carter Kuchel added 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Derrick Schorg ended with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Mitchell Schiltz scored seven points, while Spencer Schorg had a team-best six assists.
The Lady Westerners matched their season-best winning streak of five games with a 60-32 win over the Hawks. Much of the damage was done by halftime as A-W outscored their opponent 39-14 in the first half, but only added three points to their margin by the end of the game.
Brooke Koele had a career-best 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting. She also went 6-of-9 at the free-throw line. The 28 points surpasses what she had scored in the previous three games combined and was well above her season average of 12 points per game that she had entering the contest. Koele added eight rebounds and six blocks in the win.
Jaden Harris and Danika Smith each added nine points. Brynn Van Eldik had a team-best 16 rebounds and three steals to go along with her seven points.
Sydney Schroeder topped RSM in scoring with nine points.
Brittany Johnson and Lexi Harpenau each added five.
Sydney Schorg topped the team in rebounds with seven, along with steals and blocks with three each. Schorg scored four points for the Hawks.
