Theisen brings home title from West Sioux Invite
HAWARDEN — Travis Theisen brought home first place from the West Sioux Invite on Saturday, the only Plymouth County wrestler out of Le Mars Community, Hinton and Kingsley-Pierson to do so.
Theisen wrestled in the 220-pound weight class where he picked up three wins by fall en route to the title. Theisen started against Wyatt Johnson of West Sioux in the quarterfinals after a first round bye and won in a time of 1:42. The next two matches each lasted until the third period, but Theisen pinned Ridge View’s Trent Miller in the semifinals and claimed the crown with a victory over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Jarrett Meyer.
Jake Francksen-Small ended in second place in the 132-pound bracket. He advanced to the first place match with pins against Kaleb Schlup of West Sioux and Kyle Brighton of Hinton, who ended in fourth in the class. Facing a one-loss Gable Sieperda of CL/GLR, Francksen-Small was pinned in the final seconds of the first period.
Colton Hoag placed fourth at 170. He won his quarterfinal match by an injury default. Then in the semifinals, Neddy Montes of West Sioux eked out a sudden victory final in a high-scoring 13-11 margin. Hoag dropped his third place match to Dylan Winkel of CL/GLR.
Justin Otto also finished in fourth place. He won a 5-2 decision over Drew Thompson of Spencer in the quarterfinals, but was pinned in each of the next two matches.
Hinton’s top finisher was Charlie Nohr at the 195 weight class. He took second place after falling in a time of 5:00 to Austin Winkel of CL/GLR. Nohr won his previous two matches with pins as he took down Eli Van Ginkel of Western Christian and Fernando Mercado of MOC-Floyd Valley.
Thomas Bishop ended in third at 182 for the Blackhawks. He pinned Western Christian’s Daniel Donovan in 2:56 in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinals, Bishop was pinned in 47 seconds by Kolton Bus of CL/GLR. That pushed Bishop to the third place match where he earned a 15-5 major decision victory over another CL/GLR wrestler in Bryce Vande Weerd.
Teegan Tschampel added a bronze medal at 152 pounds. He quickly pinned Dylan Lieser of Sioux Falls Lincoln (S.D.) in 19 seconds. Facing another South Dakota wrestler, he fell 6-0 to Cole Loiseau of Brookings.
