Friday, December 29, 2017

Cecelia "Evelyn" Grant, of Le Mars, formerly of Castana, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars, at the age of 83, following a lengthy illness.

Cecelia Evelyn McDermott was born Nov. 17, 1934, on her maternal grandparents' farm, called "Lucky Valley," in Anthon, to Raymond and Beuliah (Jerman) McDermott. She was the second born of five girls.

Evelyn attended Miller #5 Country School, also known as the Lone Star School. After the country school, she attended St. Joseph's Catholic School, before transferring to Anthon High School, from which she graduated in 1953.

After high school, she moved to Sioux City. There she worked for Swift's Company, breaking and separating eggs.

She married Gerald "Lefty" Grant on April 28, 1954. They made their home in the Castana area, where they raised eight children. While raising her children she worked at Head Start as a cook and drove a school bus for the Maple Valley School District for 21 years. She retired due to health reasons.

After retirement, she faithfully took care of her husband at home, until his passing on Dec. 20, 2001.

Evelyn was a member of the Junior '76ers and Neighborly Pals, while residing in Castana. She enjoyed spending time with family and attending family reunions. She also enjoyed going to the casino to try her luck on the slot machines.

Evelyn moved to Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars in October 2003. Always the helper, she enjoyed setting the tables for meals, often wanting to get out of bed at 5 in the morning so she could be ready for breakfast, or wanting to get back to the home from family events so she wouldn't miss supper. She will be remembered for always being a jokester with the staff and other residents. The family would like to extend a special appreciation to all current and former staff for their years of wonderful care to "Grandma," as she was referred to by many.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Shirley (Jim) Kinney of Le Mars, Harold "Fudd" Grant of Ida Grove, Melvin "Barney" Grant of Castana, John (SueLynn) Grant of Battle Creek, Shelia Grant of Jacksonville, Florida, and William "Billy" Grant of Sentinel, Oklahoma; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Grant of Turin; her sisters: Betty Bonner of Omaha, Nebraska and Dorothy Barnes of Sloan; in-laws: Jane (Stanley) Holt of Mapleton, Karen Sokup of Ute, and Janette Kelly of Macedonia; an uncle, Joe McDermott of Indianapolis, Indiana and an aunt, Delores McDermott of Anthon; 15 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Mary Margaret, in infancy and a sister Mary Ellen "Lolly;" a son Gerald Jr. "Jerry" and his wife, Marsha; a son, Donald; grandsons James Jr. "Jimmy" and Mark Kinney, a granddaughter, Tiffany Grant; her father and mother; her parents-in-law: Vernon and Maxine Grant; and in-laws, Jim (Carol) Grant, Gale (Janita) Grant, Gene Sokup, and Kenneth (Bessie) Grant.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Visitation will be today (Friday) at Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home in Mapleton, with family present from 5-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be directed to Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.
