Strong second quarter sends Gehlen past MMCRU
LE MARS — Gehlen Catholic outscored MMCRU 24-7 in the second quarter of Friday’s meeting (December 1) between the Jays and Royals in what proved to be the difference in the game. Gehlen picked up the win by a final score of 53-33.
It was a slow start for the Jays as Bryan Nohava missed three layups early, but the Gehlen big man found his form as the game progressed, ending with a team-high 14 points.
Cole Wiltgen ended with a dozen points in the game as the Nohava-Wiltgen duo have reached double figures in each of the team’s first three games.
MMCRU was able to keep the Jays to their lowest point total so far this season, but couldn’t find enough offense of their own.
Chris Schmid ended with 10 points to lead the Royals, but went just 4-of-17 from the floor and 0-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Andrew Prescott was next with six points as four of those came at the free-throw line. Starters Will Hunter and Hunter Tentinger each had four points as did freshman Cade Pepper who came off the bench to hit one of just two 3-pointers for the Royals in the game. Tentinger and Hunter led the team in rebounding with 8 and 7 boards, respectively.
MMCRU falls to 0-2 on the season and will host Trinity Christian (1-2) in Remsen on Tuesday, December 5.
