Westerners face stiff competition on mat in opening duals
SIOUX CENTER ó Akron-Westfield saw some quality competition in their opening dual meet of the season as they met Sioux Center, Sioux City East and Woodbury Central on Tuesday.
The closest dual came against host Sioux Center, but the Westerners still fell 45-34.
Brady Bergman and Christian Wolthuizen each won by fall in the 182 and 195-pound weight classes. Bergman earned the win in 4:56 over Chayce Hooyer while Wolthuizen was slightly faster against Isaac Hooyer, winning in 3:53.
Hunter Walkingstick won by major decision 14-4 over Jaren Pierce in the teamís only win that didnít involve a pin or forfeit.
John Henrich picked up his first win after his state title last year as he bumped up to the 170-pound class. Henrich won by fall over Roberto Cardenas in 3:13.
The closest match of the night involved Cameron Bergman in the 138 class. He dropped a decision by a final score of 10-8.
It was a strong start against Sioux City East as Henrich, Wolthuizen and Brady Bergman each pinned their competitors, but only one other A-W wrestler found success. AJ Nemesio won a 6-2 decision over Patrick Fischer in the 160-pound event. The Westerners fell 55-21 to the Black Raiders.
Henrich and Wolthuizen ended the night 3-0 as each pinned their Woodbury Central opponents. Walkingstick won a 10-8 decision over Brackett Locke in the only other win for A-W.
The Westerners will next wrestle at a tournament hosted by Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Saturday.
