LE MARS — A longstanding radio personality with KLEM was honored during the first round of state volleyball action on Wednesday.

Denny Callahan, who has been the voice for the Gehlen Catholic Jays and Le Mars Bulldogs for years, was presented with the Sportsmanship Award by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa Farm Bureau.

The recognition, presented prior to Gehlen’s quarterfinal game in Cedar Falls last Wednesday, stated “Denny Callahan is recognized at this 2017 Girls State Volleyball Tournament as a model of sportsmanship and decorum for Le Mars Gehlen Catholic High School and its community.

“Good sportsmanship is about respecting opponents, coaches, and most importantly, yourself. Know that your display of decorum and good sportsmanship has not gone unnoticed. Continue to promote character, decorum and sportsmanship.”

The certificate was signed by Jean Berger, executive director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
