RSM win sets up rematch with West Sioux
REMSEN — Just eight days after surviving a 10-9 game against Newell-Fonda, the Hawks showed they weren’t messing around in the second meeting, picking up a 9-0 win over the Mustangs. The shutout marks the third such victory in as many district games as the team brings its overall winning streak to 12 games.
Jacob Wesselmann allowed just two hits in six innings of work while striking out five. At the plate he helped his own cause with a 2-for-4 night with a double and team-best 3 RBI.
Derrick Schorg added a pair of doubles, runs scored and RBIs while also walking once and stealing a base.
Carter Kuchel made the most of his only hit of the game, as he had a home run with 2 RBI, his third homer of the season.
The win sets up a rematch of last year’s 1A state title game against West Sioux. This time, for the right to go to state, will take place in Le Mars, a much more central location than Des Moines, but not nearly as illustrious as Principal Park.
RSM has followed a trajectory similar to last year as they have finished the season strong. Along with winning their last 12, they have won 16 of their last 17 games.
The only loss in that stretch — a 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Sioux. The Falcons also won the first meeting of the season in Hawarden by a score of 10-3.
The positive news for the Hawks is RSM lost the first two meetings to the Falcons last year, before pulling out an 8-5 win over their War Eagle Conference rivals in the state championship game.
West Sioux (22-5) has also recorded shutouts in all three of their postseason games and have won 12 of their last 13 games.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
