EMMETSBURG — Le Mars Community handed Emmetsburg a farewell gift from the Lakes Conference in the form of two victories over the E-Hawks on Thursday.

Emmetsburg, a charter member of the Lakes Conference when the league formed over 70 years ago, decided to move to the Twin Lakes Conference citing concerns about competing with larger schools such as Le Mars in recent years. The E-Hawks will begin play in the Twin Lakes Conference starting with the fall sports season.

The Bulldogs pulled away late as the baseball team scored six runs in the seventh inning to come home with a 9-0 win.

Gabe Eckstaine pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout as he struck out 11 batters. He added a team-best 2 RBI on one hit in the game.

Trent Hilbrands went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks as he scored once and drove home a run.

Logan Lancaster, Jacob Pottebaum and Kyle Kliever each finished with an RBI in the game.

The baseball team is now 6-1 in the Lakes Conference as they begin their second round against the conference schools. Le Mars is a game ahead of Estherville-Lincoln Central in the conference standings. The Bulldogs swept the final season series with the E-Hawks after winning 11-1 in five innings at home earlier this season.

The softball team used a four-run fourth inning to take a 4-2 win over the E-Hawks.

Kady Leusink provided three of the team’s six hits in the game and scored once.

Jenn Schneider, Christina Konz and Grace Milbrodt had the other three hits in the game.

Brook Berkenpas, Katelyn Raymond and Kali Berkenpas each had an RBI.

Brook Berkenpas gave up a pair of runs, one in the second and the other in the sixth, as she struck out four with a complete game win in the circle.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 5-3 in the conference play, trailing Cherokee and Spirit Lake in the conference standings. The team will host conference-leading Spirit Lake on Monday.

With the departure of Emmetsburg from the Lakes Conference, the league will be down to just seven members beginning in the fall.
