AKRON — On a beautiful day for golf on their home course, Akron-Westfield came away with a pair of War Eagle Conference wins over Remsen St. Mary’s. The team also faced Woodbury Central with the teams splitting wins on the day.
In the girls match, the Westerners had the top five scores on the day as they easily took the match 187-227. Bailey Davis and Brooke Koele tied for the top scores of the day with each carding a 44. Koele won the top medalist honors with a 1-hole playoff.
Rounding out the scores for the Westerners were Ann Hedlund who scored a 49 and Alayna Mullinix who ended with a 50.
A-W Head Coach Todd Colt said his team’s experience has helped them so far this season.
“Our girls team has been shooting real consistent, but our girls team is very experienced from last year,” Colt said. “I’m pleased with where we’re at right now.”
Catherine Russell led the way for the Hawks with a 54. Haley Delperdang was a stroke behind Russell with a 55. Mallory Behrens and Kelsey Behrens rounded out the counting scores for RSM as each shot a 59.
The A-W girls also beat Woodbury Central’s 208 score by 21 strokes. Sally Gallagher was just a stroke off of Davis and Koele with a 45 for the Wildcats.
The boys played a close match with A-W edging RSM 178-182.
Derrick Schorg was the overall medalist as he shot a 40 for the day for RSM.
Schorg has now been medalist in all three WEC matches he’s been in with two 40s and a 42 in those three events.
“I’d say my chipping and putting have been doing pretty good lately,” Schorg said. “It feels good to be out here and embrace the weather. Nice to see a good course in shape.”
He was followed closely behind by Jerad Black who shot a 41 for the Westerners.
Will Galles had a 43 for the Hawks while Daniel Martinsen and Max Anderson each had a 44 for A-W.
Colt said the team is gaining consistency as the season progresses.
“The more that we can practice, the better their scores are getting,” Colt said of the boys team. “They won a close match with St. Mary’s today and their scores are becoming more consistent each and every meet.”
Spencer Schorg’s 46 and Brody Ricke’s 53 rounded out the counting scores for the Hawks while Jack Anderson and Spencer Olson sealed the victory for the Westerners as each shot a 49.
While the Westerners beat RSM by four strokes, Woodbury Central did likewise to A-W with a 174 for the day. Anthony Gallagher tied with Jerad Black at 41 for top scores of the day.
Akron-Westfield returns to action Tuesday against South O’Brien while Remsen St. Mary’s is also back in action against West Sioux. The A-W girls are currently 3-0 in conference play while the boys are 2-1. The RSM boys are now 1-2 and the girls 0-3 in WEC action.
