Westerners throttle Gehlen Catholic on links
AKRON — Continuing a strong start to the season, the Akron-Westfield girls golf team defeated Gehlen Catholic 185-228.
The Lady Westerners had the top four golfers in match: Bailey Davis shot a 43, Brooke Koele and Ann Hedlund both shot a 45, and Danika Smith had the final top four score, with a 52.
The Lady Jays were led by Katelyn Willett with a 54, followed by Claire Zubrod with a 55. Kaleigh Ripley shot a 59 and Aubree Nilles ended at a 60. Krista Lipp was Gehlen’s fifth place golfer with a 62 and Harley Foreman shot a 66.
“I am pleased how my younger girls are improving,” Gehlen girls golf coach Kathy Neary said. “This is Kaleigh and Aubree’s first year out and they have shown improvement every meet. Claire and Katelyn scored their personal best tonight.”
Alayna Mullinix finished with a 57 for the Lady Westerners and Autmun Bundy rounded out the Lady Westerners’ squad by shooting a 58.
The boys team also picked up a win 171-215. The Westerners had the top five individual scores at the meet. Max Anderson led the way with a 39 to be the medalist. Jerad Black was runner-up with a 42. Daniel Martinsen and Spencer Olson rounded out the counting scores with a 44 and 46, respectively.
Dustin Schmit and Brian Sauer had the top scores for the Jays with 51s.
“What a beautiful day for golf - no wind and an easier course so I expected to shoot well today,” Gehlen boys golf coach Kent Zevenbergen said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t hit the ball straight and we were in the trees a lot. We did improve to shoot our lowest score of the season, and I was really happy with Dustin’s and Brian’s rounds. Dustin would have been in the mid 40’s if he hadn’t taken a couple OB penalties.”
