Matt Fedders, owner of Marine & RV, received the award at the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner Saturday.
Fedders reflected on the Business of the Year award Monday.
"It was a great honor, and really cool that a lot of my family, friends and employees were there with us," Fedders said.
Peter Streit, 2014 Chamber president, made the presentation.
"Sometimes a business can almost fly under the radar of the community it is in; while at the same time it is nationally recognized in its industry as one of the major players," said Streit.
The business, he said, continued to reach out to a broader customer base, generating sales in increasing numbers.
"It does so quietly in the community, without much fanfare," Streit said.
The business pushed the boundaries of its original location to the max on the curve of Highway 75 South in Le Mars.
"Even though it was recognized by the citizens of Le Mars as a solid and integral piece of the business community, few understood how expansive its customer base had become over the years," Streit continued.
In 2012, Fedders Marine & RV was recognized as the largest dealer of recreational vehicles in the nation of one of its product lines, Crossroads Cruiser.
Recognizing that to accommodate its growth, the business need to re-locate and expand, Fedders Marine & RV moved to a newly constructed 20,400-square-foot facility, on 13 acres at the north interchange of the Highway 75/60 bypass north of Le Mars. The company was previously housed in a 9,000-square-foot building.
That move, Streit said, opened up a new area for further business development in Le Mars, and created new jobs in the process.
"The size of the project certainly reflects the strength of the company," Streit said. "And their new sign certainly speaks loudly for a bright future, as it lights up the northern edge of Le Mars."
Owner Matt Fedders received a standing ovation from dinner attendees as he accepted the award on stage.
"I want to thank everyone very much for all your support," Fedders said. "My wife, Julie, my kids, my mom and dad definitely for giving us a good foundation to build on."
He added his employees have been "fabulous" to work with.
"The Chamber's been great, and the USDA has helped us a ton," Fedders added.
He also thanked people in the community.
"It makes it real easy to succeed when you know everybody has got your back," Fedders said.
He said the business will continue to grow, and encouraged everyone to come and see what the business is all about.
In an interview Monday, Fedders said his parents, Marvin and Glenda Fedders, started the company in 1965.
"Dad was doing things with RVs, but he was also doing mobile home repair and moving mobile homes," Fedders said.
The business was first named Service Pro.
"I've been doing the business for 26 years myself," Fedders said.
The marine connection came after his father purchased an older boat and repaired it.
"It's been over 40 years that we've been repairing boats and began selling RVs," Fedders said.
The company currently carries five different lines of recreational vehicles.
The business's new location has increased the number of people who stop and come in to the business, Fedders said.
"We love our location. We love the space and the accessibility from the highway," Fedders said.
The company currently employs 10 people.
"We do a lot of boat repairs," Fedders said. "We don't sell new boats, but do a lot of service work on boats."
Fedders said his RV customers come from across the country.
"I just delivered a unit to Tampa, Fla., in January," Fedders said.
Another customer in Washington has purchased several RVs through the years.
In 2013, the company sold 240 RVs.
"Le Mars is an awesome place. Everybody's great," Fedders said.
He said when he was looking to expand to the new location, he didn't receive a negative response.
"Everyone told me, 'you gotta do it,'" Fedders said.
