Merlyn Cronin, age 89 of Marcus, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, following a brief illness.

Merlyn Mary (McIntire) Cronin, the daughter of Clair and Mildred (Goodburn) McIntire, was born in Cherokee County, Iowa on Aug.8, 1923. Her childhood years were spent in the Marcus area. She graduated from Marcus High School in 1941. She then attended Westmar College, and received her teaching certificate. She taught in country schools near Marcus. With her mother's passing, Merlyn gave up teaching to stay home and care for her younger siblings.

On April 27, 1943, she was united in marriage to William J. Cronin. They made their home on a farm near Marcus where they raised cattle, hogs and sheep. Life on the farm kept her very busy, whether she was helping Willie with the chores, working in her vegetable and flower gardens, canning produce for the family, sewing and mending clothes, or doing embroidery.

She also loved to read in her spare time.

Following a brief illness, Merlyn passed away Jan. 28, 2013, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. She reached the age of 89 years, 5 months, 20 days.

She is survived by her daughters: Mary (Don) Treinen, of Remsen, JoAnn (Tony) Ehrig, of Cleghorn, Jeanene (Keith) Kunkel, of Remsen, and Karen (Chuck) Hansen, of Johnston; 15 grandchildren: David Treinen, Mike (Jen) Treinen, Janet (Mark) Brown, Julie (Doug) Schmidt, Jeremy Ehrig, Jodi Ehrig, Joel (Beth) Ehrig, Emily (Tasso) Sideris, Jason Kunkel, Ryan Kunkel, Jared Kunkel, Brett Hansen, Derek Hansen, Jena Hansen, Kristy (Shawn) Speck; five great-granddaughters and one step-great grandson; two sisters Norma Egger, of Hubbard, and Eleanor Beaton, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Bob (Glenda) McIntire, of Clive; sisters-in-law Marj McIntire, of Marcus, Jean McIntire, of Warren, Ohio, Peg Worthington, of Batavia, N.Y., Barb McIntire, of Marcus, Mary (Bob) Mai, of Remsen, Joan Cronin, of Marcus, Norma Cronin, of Holstein; a step-sister, Katheryn Nordlie, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Willie; her daughter Patricia; son-in-law Dennis Eckhoff; grandsons Brad Eckhoff and Donald M. Treinen; sister and brother-in-law Lila and Carl Miller; brother and sister-in-law Elmer and Twila McIntire; brothers Eldred, Lyle, Harold and Earl McIntire; in-laws Lloyd and Germaine Cronin, Donald Egger, Charles Beaton, Joseph and Marie Cronin, Francis Cronin and Kenneth Cronin.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church, in Marcus. Visitation will be at the church, beginning at 3 p.m. today (Thursday). The family will be present at the church from 5-7 p.m. Thursday evening. Burial will be at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Marcus. The Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Marcus is assisting the family with the arrangements.
