Hinton girls battle but can't get past Heelan

HINTON -- The Blackhawks fought hard in their matchup with Bishop Heelan on Tuesday but could not keep up their intensity in the fourth quarter, suffering their second loss of the season.

At the final buzzer, the score was 74-58, Heelan.

Hinton did not get off to a good start, committed several turnovers and found itself down early 19-5. Coach Joel Small called a timeout after which his girls played with much more energy.

The Blackhawks went on a 7-0 run to pull within seven points. By the end of the first quarter, they were down 24-18.

Small's team continued to put pressure on the Crusaders and gradually chipped away at their opponent's lead.

With 3:20 left in the second stanza, Hinton tied the game at 28-28. With justtwo minutes left, the Blackhawks gained a two point lead which they did not let go until after halftime.

Going into the break, the score was 36-34, Hinton.

Coming out of the locker room, Heelan pushed to regain the lead, but Hinton held on at first. With just seconds to go in the third period, the Crusaders scored on two consecutive possessions to gain a one point lead, 53-52.

While both teams had been evenly matched until this point, Heelan took control of the game in the final eight minutes. The Blackhawks had trouble shooting and committed costly turnovers.

Hinton was outscored by their opponents 21-6 in the fourth quarter, resulting in the final score.

Four Blackhawks finished the night in double figures. Lauren Hedlund had a team-high 15 points, followed by Sadie Shuck with 12. Alex Yoerger and Shaeler Lund had 10 points each.

Hedlund also led her team on defense with 13 rebounds for a double-double night. Shuck had seven rebound and Yoerger and Lund grabbed six boards each.

Hinton (14-2) will travel to Hawarden to face West Sioux on Friday.
