Hundreds of high school students will descend on Le Mars Saturday, as Le Mars Community High School hosts the Iowa State Large Group Speech Contest. Le Mars is the northwest district site.
At District Large Group Speech Contest Jan. 19 at Sioux City East, 21 of the 27 entries from Le Mars Community and nine of the 10 entries from Gehlen Catholic earned Division I ratings and advanced to Saturday's contest.
There will be 14 contest centers where students will perform their selections in the Le Mars Community High School and Middle School, with performances beginning at 8 a.m.
Spectators may enter at either of the schools' front doors marked "A."
There is a $3 suggested donation per person for admission.
"Groups will perform throughout the day until 5 p.m. or later, so spectators may come at any time and find great groups to enjoy," said Erin Ohrlund, LCS large group speech coach.
"We're expecting about 80 schools and thousands of participants and spectators to come to Le Mars that day," she said.
Ohrlund and fellow LCS teacher and coach Sherri Permeswaran are serving as contest managers for the Le Mars site.
LCS teacher Shawn Starr also serves as a large group speech coach.
LCS students will host a State Speech Showcase Night Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the LCS Little Theatre.
The showcase will feature all the groups which will be performing Saturday.
