Friday, January 25, 2013

MAPLETON -- The Kingsley-Pierson girls battled back into the game after an early drought but couldn't quite tip the final score in their favor, falling 42-40 to Maple Valley-Anthon Oto Monday.

This game was the Panthers' first round of Western Valley Conference tournament play.

Their loss means K-P will host Western Valley Saturday.

In Monday's game, the MVAO Rams had the first quarter lead 11-5, but K-P answered back with a 13-point second quarter, holding MVAO to only three points, claiming the halftime lead at 18-14.

The Panthers scored 10 in the third quarter, but couldn't keep up with the Rams, who added 16 to their score. Going into the final quarter, MVAO had a two point lead, 30-28.

That two point lead ended up costing K-P the game.

Both teams scored 12 points in the final quarter, with the Rams just hanging on for the win.

MVAO's sophomore Kayla Morgan led her team in scoring with 16 points, and freshman Emalee Funderman was also in double digits with 11.

For Kingsley-Pierson, freshman Marina Keck scored a team-high 13 points, followed by freshman Rachel Mercer with eight and senior Megan Meister with six. Keck also had five assists and three steals.

Freshman Kiana Phelps led her team defensively with 11 rebounds. Keck grabbed 10 boards.

The loss puts K-P at an overall record of 11-7.
