MARCUS -- The Rockets came back from behind with a strong second half to hand the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys their third loss of the season.
Remsen-Union took the game 61-50.
"We were down by four at halftime," R-U coach Steve Neuberger said. "Our guys did a great job defensively in the second half. We did a great job of limiting their looks and we did a better job of rebounding."
In the first and second quarter, MMC (11-3) kept just out of reach. The Eagles outscored the Rockets 18-16 in the first quarter and 14-12 in the second.
The score at halftime was 32-28 in MMC's favor.
"Defensively we played good enough to win the game," MMC coach Mark Fisher said. "But poor shot selection and turnovers forced us into transition defense too many times. ... Poor decisions, lazy passes, and poor execution were our downfall. You just cannot play like that and expect to beat a good team like Remsen-Union."
The Rockets fired out of the halftime break with a 16-point third quarter, holding MMC to eight points.
Going into the final stanza, R-U had taken the lead, 44-40.
The Rockets only stretched their lead from there, outscoring the Eagles 17-10 in the final quarter to make it an 11-point victory.
"We gave up too many offensive rebounds in the first half, giving them second chances at the basket," Neuberger said. "In the second half, defensively we locked down and did a better chance of rebounding. I thought that was the difference."
R-U's Tanner Hilbrands led all scoring for the night with 21 points. Cam Kuchel added 20 points for the Rockets.
MMC's high scorer was Tyler Prunty with 18 points for the night. MMC's Dylan Spieler grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles.
With the Rockets' win, they move to 14-3 overall. R-U is 6-2 in the War Eagle Conference.
