AKRON -- The Remsen-Union girls held the lead for the first half, but Akron-Westfield claimed the 40-36 conference win in the final period.
The Rockets held a slim margin over the Westerners coming out of the first quarter, with the score 11-9, R-U.
In the second stanza, the Rockets kept that two-point lead, with the score 19-17 at the half.
A-W tied it up in the third quarter, outscoring R-U 7-5, to make it 24-24 going into the final period.
The Westerners put together a big finish with a 16-point fourth quarter, while R-U scored 12.
"We played good enough defense to be in the game, but we struggled to score points," R-U coach Mike West said. "Akron did a nice job on the defensive boards; they held us to one shot most of the night."
The Westerners also did better at the line, going 12-for-25 for the night.
"They went to the free throw line more than we did and shot a better percentage," West said.
A-W's Dana Hedlund led all scoring for the night with 14 points.
Senior Haley Coyle added another eight points for the Westerners.
Juniors Bethany Eastman and Kayla Tindall led A-W rebounds with eight each.
Leading the Rockets' scoring, senior Brittany Weikel pounded out 13 points plus seven rebounds and six assists for R-U.
Sophomore Shelby Barker contributed nine points for the Rockets.
"She pushed her way into my lineup and she's been playing pretty well," West said.
Freshman Megan Maass added eight points for R-U.
With the Westerners' War Eagle Conference win, A-W's record improves to 5-9 overall.
R-U's record drops to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
