REMSEN --The Rockets came back from a tough loss to Boyden-Hull Monday to stump the River Valley boys in a 65-48 win at home.

In the first quarter, R-U doubled the Wolverine's score, finishing the period 20-10.

"I was really pleased with the way we came out of the gates in the first quarter," R-U boys coach Steve Neuberger said. "It's always tough the night after a tough loss to bounce back with a lot of energy, but I thought our guys came prepared to play."

River Valley (2-10) tried to come back with a 15-point second quarter, but the Rockets scored 16 to keep an 11-point lead.

It was 36-25, R-U, at halftime.

The Rockets came back from the break with intensity again, scoring 14 points and holding River Valley to nine, making it 50-34 in R-U's favor after the third quarter.

"River Valley is kind of a pesky team; we had a hard time putting them away," Neuberger said. "But we were able to get enough stops defensively in the second half and knock some shots down to pull away midway through the third and into the fourth."

Remsen-Union outscored River Valley 15-14 in the final stanza to clinch the non-conference win.

"We got after it from the opening tip, and I thought we played 32 minutes of pretty good basketball," Neuberger said. "It was a good, overall team win for us with contributions from a lot of guys."

R-U junior Tanner Hilbrands led scoring with 20 points, going 9-of-13 from the field, including two threes, and 4-of-7 from the line.

"Hilbrands shot the ball really well, did a good job attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line," Neuberger said.

Senior Andrew Hagert scored 13 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the Rockets. He also had three steals and two blocked shots

"Andrew played a tremendous game offensively and defensively," Neuberger said. "He really set the tone for us defensively."

Senior Cam Kuchel also scored 13 points for the night.

R-U senior Scott Schroeder logged three steals for R-U and junior Austin Stock had six assists.

The Rockets' win ups their overall record to 10-2. They are 5-1 in War Eagle Conference play with their next conference matchup Friday with Remsen St. Mary's.

Boyden-Hull 69, Remsen-Union 51

A rocky middle of the game made it tough for the Rockets to gain ground against Boyden-Hull in their non-conference matchup Monday.

The Comets (8-2) took the win 69-51.

"Boyden-Hull is a really good opponent, a solid basketball team offensively and defensively," R-U coach Steve Neuberger said. "I was proud of how our guys competed."

It was a close first quarter with R-U only trailing Boyden-Hull by four, going into the second quarter with the score 19-15 in the Comets' favor.

But Boyden-Hull widened the gap by six points in the second period, making it 33-23 at halftime.

The Rockets got into a foul trouble early on, so they had to adapt their game plan, Neuberger noted.

R-U scored 15 points in the third quarter, but the Comets had a 24-point quarter to stretch their lead to 19. It was 57-38, Boyden-Hull, going into the final period.

R-U outscored the Comets 13-12 in the last quarter, but Boyden-Hull held on to their significant lead for the win.

"Our kids competed hard, and we're in the same district as them, so come post season, you never know, we might get another shot at them," Neuberger said. "If we do, hopefully we can be at full strength, keeping the kids on the floor, and have a better showing."

R-U had two boys in double figures for scoring, led by junior Tanner Hilbrands with 12 points. Senior Cam Kuchel scored 10 points for the night, and junior Austin Stock added another nine.

Hilbrands also led in rebounds with four. Kuchel had three assists, and seniors Ethan Van Dam and Andrew Hagert each had three steals and two blocks against Boyden-Hull.
