AKRON -- The Akron-Westfield boys found it tough to come back from a rocky first quarter in their 42-18 loss to South O'Brien Saturday.
The Wolverines (5-5) blanked A-W in the first period, taking a 12-0 lead going into the second quarter.
The Westerners found the basket, scoring seven points before halftime, but South O'Brien outscored them by six to make it 25-7, Wolverines.
A-W struggled again coming out of the break, scoring two points to South O'Brien's 11, trailing 36-9 going into the final stanza.
The Westerners dug deeper for a little fire, outscoring the Wolverines 9-6 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to close South O'Brien's lead.
The Wolverines' senior Kody Nelson led scoring with 10 points.
For Akron-Westfield, sophomore Tavian Banks led scoring with five points and sophomore Kevin Carlson added four more.
Junior Chance Hoffman led in rebounds with seven and Banks grabbed five for A-W.
The loss made the Westerners' record 0-9 going into Tuesday's matchup with Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn on the road.
