Comets edge out Remsen-Union girls

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

REMSEN -- The Remsen-Union girls were closing in on Boyden-Hull in their non-conference game Monday, but couldn't finish business in the Rockets' 36-33 loss.

The Comets (2-9) took the early lead, heading into the second quarter with an 11-6 edge.

"It was a low scoring game," R-U girls coach Mike West said. "Both offenses seemed to struggle."

Boyden-Hull stretched the lead to eight points at halftime, with the score 23-15 for the Comets.

In the third quarter, the Rockets held Boyden-Hull to five points, adding nine points for R-U. The Comets led 28-26 going into the final period.

"I was happy with our defensive effort, but we had too many turnovers," West said. "We didn't move the ball real well."

The fourth quarter was close all the way.

With a minute to go in the game, R-U closed the gap to one point, but Boyden-Hull stayed just out of reach for the win.

"I was happy that our girls came out and played aggressively. They gave it their best effort in the second half," West said. "We just came up a little short again."

Leading scorer for R-U was senior Hailey Loutsch with 11 points.

The Rockets' senior Brittany Sudtelgte added 9 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

R-U's loss dropped their record to 4-7.

The Rockets kept it tied up at 12-12 by the end of the first quarter, but the Hawks pulled ahead in the second, leading 32-22 going into the halftime break.

HMS held R-U to two points in the third quarter, scoring 18 of their own to make it 50-24.

R-U outscored the Hawks 10-9 in the final quarter, but the distance was to great for them to cover, falling by 25 points to HMS.

Leading scorer for R-U was senior Hailey Loutsch with 12 points.

Senior Brittany Sudtelgte and junior Kelsey Ruden each added seven points for the Rockets, and Sudtelgte pulled down six rebounds.
