Mildred B. (Gengler) Hoss, 92, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, surrounded by her family.

Mildred Bernice Sitzmann was born Dec. 22, 1920, on the family farm in Elkhorn Township, rural Plymouth County, to Louis and Matilda (Ruhland) Sitzmann.

Mildred attended country school near her home and later graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1939. She continued her education at Western Union College earning a teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools in Plymouth County for five years.

Mildred was united in marriage to Clarence Gengler on May 15, 1945, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Neptune. The couple farmed in Union Township. Clarence died April 26, 1965.

Mildred was united in marriage to Richard "Dick" Hoss on Nov. 16, 1968, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen and moved to Le Mars. Dick died Feb. 19, 2005.

Mildred loved to be around her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed camping with family and friends, having coffee with friends, playing pinochle, and crocheting.

Mildred shared her talents by making afghans for her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and a 50-year member of Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of Catholic Ladies Club where she held the office of secretary for many years.

Survivors include her six children: Larry (Sue) Gengler, of Merrill, Peggy (Dwight) Wendschlag, of Kalispell, Mont., Bill (Irene) Gengler, Garry (Kate) Gengler, LuAnn (Whitey) Kommes, all of Le Mars, and Arlene (Jeff) Tobin, of Rock Springs, Wis.; five stepchildren: Jim (Rosanne) Hoss, of Le Mars, Dennis (Donna) Hoss, of Yankton, S.D., Charlie (Barb) Hoss, of Coralville, Tom (Kathy) Hoss, of Le Mars, and Sandy (Loren) Schnepf, of Oyens; 29 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Alvina Nuebel, of Le Mars; a brother, Roy (Martha) Sitzmann, of Le Mars; in-laws: Rita Sitzmann, of Le Mars, Marge Gengler, of Remsen, Marjorie Gengler, of Quimby, Joe (Viola) Gengler, of Remsen, Don (Freda) Hoss, of Le Mars, Lorraine Ruden, of Struble; and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Matilda (Ruhland) Sitzmann; her husband Clarence on April 26, 1965; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sylvester (Blondina) Sitzmann and Venard (Evelyn) Sitzmann; two sisters, Dolly (Buzz) Jauer and Babe (Donnie) Mai; her husband Richard "Dick" Hoss on Feb. 19, 2005; in-laws: Erwin (Marie) Tentinger, Mike (Martha) Gengler, Al (Shirley) Gengler, Ray Gengler, Norma (Paul) Kayser, Vernon Gengler, Ray Ruden, and Silvus (Marjorie) Ruden.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with the family present will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars with a 4 p.m. rosary followed by a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service Wednesday evening at the church. Visitation will continue Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be her sons and sons-in-law, Larry Gengler, Bill Gengler, Garry Gengler, Dwight Wendschlag, Whitey Kommes, and Jeff Tobin.

Arrangements are with the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund.
