Monday, January 7, 2013

AKRON -- South O'Brien came out on top, winning 29-17 in a low-scoring matchup between the Wolverines and Akron-Westfield Saturday.

The first quarter ended up close with the Westerners (2-8) scoring nine points to South O'Brien's 10. But the Wolverines blanched A-W in the second quarter, making it 19-9 at the half in South O'Brien's favor.

Coming back from the halftime break, the Westerners put pressure on the Wolverines, holding them to two points, while A-W scored four. Going into the final period, South O'Brien led by eight, with the score 21-13.

A-W couldn't find enough steam to close the gap, scoring four points in the final quarter to the Wolverines' eight.

Dana Hedlund was the only Westerner to get sent to the free throw line for the night, making four of her six shots.

Hedlund, Sarah Schroeder and Bethany Eastman, all juniors, led A-W's scoring with four points each. Sophomore Kortney Hedlund added three points on A-W's lone trey.

The Westerners had a rough night from the field, shooting only 7-of-51.

Hedlund and Schroeder each nabbed five rebounds for the Westerners, and junior Jordan Hansen made two steals for the night.

A-W next travels to Marcus for a matchup with Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Tuesday, then heads to Sloan to meet Westwood on Saturday.
