"I was real happy with the intensity they came out with right away," R-U girls coach Mike West said. "They were playing hard and playing good team defense."
The Rockets pulled ahead with an 18-9 lead in the first quarter, and they held a strong lead at halftime, with the score 34-25, R-U.
"At the end of the half we had a pretty good lead and we kind of let them get back in it a little bit," West said.
West said he was concerned a few girls might get into foul trouble so he had them take the bench for a little while.
The third quarter was a defensive battle, with R-U only scoring three points and Spalding scoring four.
"We had good shot selection, but it just didn't fall for us," West said.
The Rockets led heading into the fourth quarter 37-29.
R-U found the basket again in the final quarter, sinking 25 points before the final buzzer.
"Things started to fall for us," West said. "We were a little sluggish in the third quarter; otherwise it was a real nice effort. We worked the ball and we got the shots we wanted to take."
Senior Brittany Weikel led scoring with 20 points for the night. She made it a double-double with 10 assists.
Senior Brittany Sudtelgte added 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double night.
Kelsey Ruden was also in double figures with 12 points. She pulled down nine boards for R-U.
"Kelsey had her best game of the year, and senior Haley Loutsch had a real efficient night," West said. "All of my seniors really stepped up for the night."
R-U (4-5) has a grueling schedule coming up, playing at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Friday, then picking right back up with a pair of home games against Boyden-Hull and River Valley Monday and Tuesday.
West said it was good to come out of the Christmas break with a win.
"I wasn't quite sure how we'd respond after having 10 days off, but we played real well," he said.
