Merrill to celebrate New Year's Eve

Friday, December 28, 2012

For those looking for some New Year's Eve fun close to home, Merrill might be a good choice.

The Second Annual New Year's Eve Hog Roast & Dance will include a meal, music and a dance, all at Kissinger Community Center, lower level.

Social hour starts at 5 p.m. Monday with a 6 p.m. dinner and an 8 p.m. dance with music provided by Thriller Entertainment.

There is a charge to attend the meal and the dance.

A dance ticket includes the chance to win a 42-inch flat screen TV and/or door prizes, said Bruce Norgaard, of Merrill.

Norgaard, Merrill mayor pro-tem, said all the proceeds will go to the Kissinger Community Center Fund for upkeep of the building.

"We would like to buy more tables and chairs," he said. "We have about 15. We would like to buy at least five more."

Those items could then be used in the Sam Merrill Ballroom, named after the founder of the town of Merrill, Norgaard said.

Last year's New Year's Eve event was a huge success so organizers decided to bring it back, he said.

"The proceeds from last year helped us put this on this year," Norgaard said.

The whole town of Merrill comes together to make the event a success doing everything from roasting the hog to decorating the building, he said.

"We like to have community gatherings," Norgaard explained. "It was just nice to have a New Year's Eve celebration in our hometown."

Last year's event drew people from places from all over the area including Le Mars and Sioux City, he said.

"There were about 160 at the meal last year. There were more than that at the dance," Norgaard said. "It was a very good night."

He said having a local New Year's Eve celebration is good.

"People don't have to drive," Norgaard said. "It's a community event put on by our community."

For advance tickets call Mary at 712-938-2059 or Tammy at 712-938-2061.

Tickets can also be purchased individually at the door for the meal and dance.
